BAMBOO BRIDGING: AUGMENTED REALITY FABRICATION

After a three-year hiatus, the beach communities of the North Coast of São Paulo, São Sebastião, were looking forward to a packed Carnaval long-weekend that would help reactivate the tourist economy weakened during the pandemic.  Yet for eight hours on the Saturday night of the holiday, a record-breaking 600mm of rain pounded down on the region, causing massive landslides that destroyed homes, blocked roads, and were the cause of 65 deaths in a dense community of homes precariously-built on the steep slopes of a near-by hillside.  In the days and weeks after the tragedy, a large recovery and reconstruction effort took place with donations from all over Brasil, to help the displaced families and clear the roads. One casualty in the aftermath of the storms that has remained largely overlooked by the rebuilding program was the partial destruction of a wooden foot-bridge in the Barra de Sahy, São Sebastião, that connected a hillside community with the beach town, crossing over a river that separates the two.  In reaction to the requests of inhabitants, the AA Visiting School São Paulo 2023 will work on proposing a new resilient bridge to reinstate this important infrastructure, so to help reinvigorate the local tourist economy.

For the bridge spectulation proposals, the workshop will expand on techniques developed in the Visiting School São Paulo 2022 workshop, by using Augmented Reality technology and the fabrication of light-weight and efficient geometries built with bamboo. The design and fabrication of these parametric structures will again be led by architects Prof. Kristof Crolla and Mr. Garvin Goepel, using both analog and digital techniques.

The aim will be to combine bamboo construction and digital technologies, based on digital design research used for the implementation of bending-active bamboo shell structures. Students will work on physical prototypes of these low-tech building systems on location at the beach. The prototypes will be designed and developed in Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Kangaroo, and Karamba, and they will be fabricated aided by Fologram, holographic devices (Microsoft HoloLenses), and handheld smartphones.

The 10-day workshop will take place in the beach-town of Barra the Sahy, São Sebastião, and be primarily taught in English, with the support from a team of English and Portuguese-speaking local digital design experts and members of the @subdv_architecture team.

PROMINENT FEATURES OF THE WORKSHOP/ SKILLS DEVELOPED

The course consists of two main chapters:

1) procedural bending-active bamboo shell design exploration, and

2) design system evaluation through demonstrator design prototyping.

In these, after initial basic training in Parametric Modeling in Rhino Grasshopper, students will be introduced to digital tools for physical behaviour simulation (Kangaroo 2), and procedural structural analysis (Karamba), to obtain structurally optimised forms and equilibrium surfaces that can be analysed for their structural properties. The efficiency will be tested through medium-scale physical model making from thin bamboo sticks. These physical models can then function as material prototypes for full-scale implementation in collaboration within the beach context.

Após um hiato de três anos, as comunidades litorâneas do Litoral Norte paulista esperavam um feriadão carnavalesco lotado que ajudaria a reativar a economia turística fragilizada durante a pandemia. No entanto, por oito horas seguidas na noite de sábado do feriado, uma chuva recorde de 600 mm caiu sobre a região, causando deslizamentos de terra que destruíram casas, bloquearam estradas e foram a causa de 65 mortes em uma densa comunidade de casas precariamente construídas próximas as encostas.

Nos dias e semanas após a tragédia, um grande esforço de recuperação e reconstrução ocorreu com doações de todo o Brasil, para ajudar as famílias desabrigadas e desobstruir as estradas. Uma vítima após as tempestades que permaneceu amplamente negligenciada pelo programa de reconstrução, foi até a destruição parcial de uma passarela de madeira na praia de Barra de Sahy, que conectava a comunidade de encosta com a cidade litorânea, atravessando um rio que separa os dois. Atendendo aos pedidos dos habitantes, o AA Visiting School São Paulo 2023 trabalhará na proposição de uma nova ponte resiliente para restabelecer esta importante infraestrutura, de modo a ajudar a revigorar a economia turística local.

Para a proposta da ponte, o Workshop irá expandir as técnicas desenvolvidas no Workshop Visiting School São Paulo 2022, usando a tecnologia de Realidade Aumentada e a fabricação de geometrias leves e eficientes construídas com bambu. O projeto e a fabricação dessas estruturas paramétricas serão novamente conduzidos pelos arquitetos Prof. Kristof Crolla e Sr. Garvin Goepel, usando técnicas analógicas e digitais. O objetivo será combinar a construção com bambu e as tecnologias digitais, com base na pesquisa de design digital usada para a implementação de estruturas de casca de bambu com dobra ativa. Os alunos trabalharão em protótipos físicos desses sistemas de construção de baixa tecnologia na praia. Os protótipos serão projetados e desenvolvidos em Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Kangaroo e Karamba, e serão fabricados com auxílio de Fologram, dispositivos holográficos (Microsoft HoloLenses) e smartphones portáteis. O workshop de 10 dias acontecerá na cidade litorânea de Barra the Sahy e será ministrado em inglês, com o apoio de uma equipe de especialistas em design digital locais que falam inglês e português e membros da equipe @subdv_architecture.
