The mysterious underworld of abandoned galleries underneath Avenida Paulista are in stark contrast to the hot concrete sidewalks above.  As per the proposed LowLine project in New York City’s Lower East Side (http://thelowline.org/), participants will explore how these galleries could be a site for a new ground for much-needed cool public space that could spawn unexpected and alternative cultural interventions and help interconnect and animate existing underground systems.  The problem of bringing sunlight and people underground, which requires creating a dialogue and a redefinition of the street above as well, forms the focus of the workshop. Students will work with environmental design experts from London and São Paulo, to learn how to employ parametric design with environmental and structural plug-ins, to directly use sunlight and wind forces to sculpt light openings into these galleries. Students will also learn to employ digital fabrication at FAU USP to prototype and make models of their proposals for these environmentally articulated grounds.

Prominent Features of the workshop/ skills developed

  • Teaching team: architects, environmental designers,  and environmental engineers from London including: Klaus Bode of Urban Systems Design and Herman Calleja of CHAPMANBDSP /www.chapmanbdsp.com , both who are also part of the teaching staff of the AA Sustainable Environmental Design Graduate Programme (AA SED), alongside environmental design professor Joana Carla Soares Gonçalves  from FAU USP and the AA SED  as well,  and architects from SUBdV architects, a pioneering Brasilian practice in the fields of parametric environmental design. LINK FOR BIOS OF TUTOR . There will also be a team of Computational Design and Digital Fabrication assistant tutors including Filipe de Campos, Juliana Croffi, Vitor Calixto, Guilherme Giantini and Julia Tenuta Martins.
  • Facilities: the workshop will take place at University Architecture Studios and workshop at FAU USP, equipped with CNC router/miller and laser cutters.
  • Computational skills: students will learn to use Rhino and Grasshopper and specific environmental design and engineer scripts such as Ladybug, Honeybee, and Kangaroo.
  • Fabrication: students will learn to prepare files to be cut and milled by the CNC router/miller, and laser cutters , so to produce prototype models of their lowline proposals.
  • A series of Public Lectures will be given in the evenings by prominent London based Environmental Engineers.

Once you complete the online application and make a full payment, you are registered to the programme. A CV or a portfolio is not required.

The deadline for applications is eg: 29 June 2018.

All participants travelling from abroad are responsible for securing any visa required, and are advised to contact their home embassy early. After payment of fees, the AA School can provide a letter confirming participation in the workshop.

Fees

The AA Visiting School requires a fee of £695 per participant, which includes a £60 Visiting membership fee.

Fees do not include flights or accommodation, but accommodation options can be advised. Students need to bring their own laptops, digital equipment and model making tools. Please ensure this equipment is covered by your own insurance as the AA takes no responsibility for items lost or stolen at the workshop.

Eligibility

The workshop is open to current architecture and design students, phd candidates and young professionals. Software Requirements: Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino (SR7 or later)

O misterioso submundo das galerias abandonadas embaixo da Avenida Paulista contrastam com as calçadas de concreto quente acima da avenida. Tomando como referência o projeto urbano paisagistico nova iorquino – LowLine Lower East Side, Nova York (http://thelowline.org/), os participantes irão explorar como essas galerias existentes poderão ser ambientes favoráveis a programas de uso público gerando intervenções culturais alternativas e interconectando e animando os sistemas subterrâneos existentes.  O problema de trazer a luz do sol e as pessoas para o subsolo, o que requer a criação de um diálogo e uma redefinição da rua acima também, forma o foco da oficina.  Os alunos trabalharão com especialistas em design ambiental de Londres e São Paulo e aprenderão a empregar computação paramétrica com plug-ins ambientais e estruturais para mediar as forças do sol e do vento para esculpir aberturas de luz nessas galerias. Os alunos também aprenderão a empregar a fabricação digital no FAU USP para prototipar e fazer modelos de suas propostas para esses novos territórios ambientalmente articulados.
